How to patch a hole in the wall

A step-by-step guide to patching small, medium and large holes in drywall and plaster walls — with the tools, materials, costs and clear signals for when to call a verified Kuvo Pro.

Holes in interior walls happen to every home — doorknobs swung too hard, anchor bolts ripped out, a chair leg in the wrong place. The good news: 80% of the wall holes we see on Kuvo job posts in Zimbabwe are small enough to fix in under an hour for under USD 25 in materials. The trick is matching the technique to the size of the hole.

Quick decision guide

  • Under 1 cm (nail or pin holes): spackle and paint. 5 minutes.
  • 1–10 cm (doorknob, anchor blowout): self-adhesive mesh patch + joint compound. 45 min over 2 days.
  • 10–30 cm (impact damage): cut a drywall patch, secure to a wooden brace, skim and paint. 2–3 hours over 3 days.
  • Larger than 30 cm, near electrics, or in plaster: call a verified Kuvo handyman or painter. Don't DIY structural patches.

What you'll need

Tools

  • Putty knife (10 cm and 20 cm)
  • 120 and 220 grit sandpaper
  • Drywall saw or sharp Stanley knife
  • Tape measure and pencil
  • Dust mask and safety glasses

Materials (USD 8–25)

  • Spackle or joint compound (250 g tub)
  • Self-adhesive mesh patch
  • Drywall offcut (for holes > 10 cm)
  • Primer and matching wall paint
  • 50 mm masking tape

Step 1 — Assess the hole

Measure the widest point. Shine a torch into the cavity and check for wiring, pipes or studs. If you see an electrical cable within 5 cm of the hole, stop and book an electrician — patching over hot wiring is a fire risk.

Step 2 — Clean and trim

Pull off any loose paper or crumbling plaster with your fingers. For a medium hole, trim ragged edges square with a Stanley knife — a clean rectangle is far easier to patch than a star-shaped tear. Vacuum or wipe the cavity so the compound bonds cleanly.

Step 3 — Apply the patch

For 1–10 cm holes, press a self-adhesive mesh square over the opening — it should extend at least 2 cm beyond every edge. For 10–30 cm holes, cut a drywall offcut to fit the hole, screw a 10 × 2 cm wooden brace inside the cavity, then screw the drywall patch to that brace so it sits flush with the wall surface.

Step 4 — Skim with compound

Load your putty knife and spread joint compound across the patch in thin layers — three thin coats sand smoother than one thick coat. Feather the edges 10–15 cm beyond the patch so it blends seamlessly into the surrounding wall. Allow 4–8 hours between coats; Harare and Bulawayo humidity in the rainy season can double dry times.

Step 5 — Sand smooth

Once the final coat is fully dry, sand with 120 grit to knock down ridges, then finish with 220 grit for a paint-ready surface. Run your hand across the patch — if you can feel it, your eyes will see it after painting. Wipe all dust off before priming.

Step 6 — Prime and paint

Spot-prime the patch with a stain-blocking primer. Once dry, paint with your existing wall colour using a small roller in a "W" pattern to blend the sheen. For older walls where exact paint isn't available, painting the entire wall corner-to-corner avoids the visible "patch shadow" effect.

When to call a Kuvo Pro

  • Hole larger than 30 cm, or multiple holes from one impact
  • Water-damaged or mouldy drywall — the substrate needs replacing first
  • Cracked plaster walls — these need a proper plaster skim, not filler
  • You can't match the existing paint and the wall is in a visible room
  • The hole is in a rental and your landlord requires a "professional finish" sign-off

Kuvo-matched handymen typically charge USD 15–60 for a small-to-medium wall patch including paint touch-up, completed same-day in most Harare and Bulawayo suburbs.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to patch a hole in the wall in Zimbabwe?

DIY materials cost USD 8–25. A handyman or painter through Kuvo typically charges USD 15–60 for a small-to-medium patch including paint matching.

When should I call a professional instead of DIYing?

Call a pro for holes larger than 15 cm, holes near electrical fittings, water-damaged drywall, or any plaster wall where the substrate is cracking — these need structural repair plus skim.

What's the difference between spackle and joint compound?

Spackle dries faster (15–30 min), shrinks less, and is ideal for nail holes up to 2 cm. Joint compound is better for larger patches because it sands smoother for paint.

How long should I wait before painting?

Wait until the compound is fully dry — at least 24 hours for a thick patch. Painting too early traps moisture and causes flashing (a visible sheen difference).

Can I patch a hole in a plaster wall the same way?

Plaster needs a bonding agent first and a finer skim coat. The drywall mesh patch method does not bond well to old lime plaster — call a plasterer.
